Some of my favorite cakes to make are my special order ones, ones that people want to look specifically like something.  I really love to make special cakes for my kid's birthdays too.  I want them to always remember those special cakes on their birthdays.  Here are a few of the specialty shaped cakes I have made.

As friends started using my cakes at their parties, I started getting orders from other people.  I really enjoy the work and challenge of making different cakes.  Just yesterday, I created cakes for my sister's bridal shower and I will be doing her wedding cake as well.  I also just received an order for a Stanley cup cake.  This is going to be a challenge, but I am super excited.  Attached is a photo from my sister-in-law's shower yesterday.

As I finished up my second class, and continued to work on my special techniques, I began to take a fondant class.  Fondant is where the icing comes in a ball (kind of like play-doh) and is rolled out and placed over the cake and then fitted to the cake.  It was a much tougher technique than I expected, but I continued to work away at it and today I find it easier than butter cream icing.  More and more people started ordering cakes from me, and I even started getting order from strangers.  It was a thriller experience to know that people actually wanted my cakes!  Here are a couple of my first fondant cakes!

As I finished my first class up, I had so enjoyed it and decided to take another one.  In the first class I had learned basic, but as I continued on I learned more difficult techniques such basket weave, how to create flowers, how to create shaped cakes.  I was throwing a bridal shower for my sister and she graciously allowed my to make the cake, even though I was a beginner.  Then slowly friends started requesting small cakes here and there.  Here are a couple of my earlier cakes that I made for people.

My very first cake in my very first class.  Definitely room for improvement!

Getting Started

About four years ago, after my second child was born, and I had been a stay at home mom with my first child for 2 1/2 years, I decided that it was time for me to venture out and try something new.  I was inundated with diapers, and baby food, and needed something out of the house that belonged only to me.
I had always been in awe of those cake decorators that could create beautiful cakes and decided to take a try at it myself.  So, I signed up for a Wilton Cake Decorating class at Michaels and the rest is history!
